The Professional Wilderness Outfitters Association was started in the early 1960's to focus on wilderness related issues in Montana. All members are required to have a minimum amount of pack  and riding stock, camp equipment commensurate with the stock, specific experience requirements, operate in a designated Wilderness area, and meet other standards. We work closely with the Forest Service and the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Department to preserve the wilderness, its fish and wildlife. We want to share this unique part of our state and heritage with those who would appreciate it. Our goal is to provide an unforgettable experience that will be one of the highlights of your life. Accommodations include lodges and cabins with all the modern amenities to lodges and cabins with no electricity to tents (some with heating stoves) in the wilderness. Meals are usually served family style. We will be your hosts while you enjoy some the  most spectacular scenery and wildlife ever created.

The Chinese Wall in the Bob Marshall Wilderness - NorthWest Montana

The wilderness areas we operate in are in the pristine Rocky Mountains and  include the Bob Marshall, Great Bear, Scapegoat wilderness. These areas are only accessible by foot or horseback.

Our members specialize in summer pack trips in the wilderness, wilderness float trips, wilderness fishing trips, sightseeing and photography trips in the wilderness plus deer, bear and elk hunting trips in the wilderness. We strive to provide a quality experience that you will never forget.

Activities typically include horseback riding, hiking, fishing in the high mountain lakes and streams with flies or lures, barbecue, photography, sightseeing, hunting, and most important of all just being glad your alive.

Animals include deer, elk, black bear, grizzly bear, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, bald eagles, golden eagles and that is just to name a few. Fish are typically  west slope cutthroat (with an occasional Yellowstone cutthroat) and rainbow trout.

Summer pack trips fall into several categories. Staying at a fixed camp and doing day rides from the fixed camp, roving camp where the camp moves each day, a scheduled trip with a specific itinerary or a custom trip where you set the schedule.  Trips are are planned for comfort and enjoyment and not as a test of your endurance. These trips are for people who like to ride and camp out, while enjoying fishing, wildflowers, hiking, scenic beauty and the wonders of nature. Your trip could be for one or two days up to 10 days. With the fixed camp you can ride out for the day or hike if you prefer and stay in the same place each night. With the roving camp we move campsites and have lay over days for rest and relaxation, or you can take a scenic ride, hike, or fish the streams and lakes as an option. Guests ride experienced mountain horses at a walking pace which means you need not be an experienced rider. Guests of all ages enjoy this camping experience.

Also available are guided and unguided big game hunts. These are true wilderness hunts. We hunt by foot or by horseback with experienced horses that are used to the mountains. With the exception of the day in and out, we hunt all day, every day of the hunt. Most days begin before dawn by riding horses to the specific drainage that we are going to hunt and then we walk from there. We spend most of the day walking, stalking and using field glasses to spot game. We typically return after dark. We hunt some of the finest big game hunting areas of the Wilderness and adjacent National Forests. We have both early season bugle and late season hunts. Some of our outfitters provide drop camps where the hunters are packed in & out of a completely furnished wall tent camps.
